Every family knows the number: out of 36 gunas, 18 is the passing mark. Matchmaking apps compute it in a second, and many families stop there. But every experienced Jyotishi has seen 30-plus matches struggle and sub-20 matches flourish. The guna score is real — it is simply the beginning of matching, not the end.
What the 36 gunas actually measure
Ashtakoota Milan compares the two Moon positions across eight dimensions — temperament (Gana), instinctive compatibility (Yoni), mutual prosperity (Bhakoot), health line (Nadi) and four others. Because it reads only the Moon, it is essentially a compatibility test of two emotional natures. Important? Absolutely. Complete? Not remotely — a marriage involves two whole charts, not two Moons.
What the score can't see
Serious matching examines at least five layers beyond the gunas:
- The 7th house of each chart — the marriage house itself: its lord, occupants and aspects describe the spouse each person is 'wired' for and the texture of partnership they create.
- Mangal dosha, properly judged — Mars placements matter, but half the flagged cases cancel on closer inspection (by sign, house, aspect or mutuality). Rejecting a fine match on an uncancelled-checkbox basis is the most common Milan mistake we see.
- Dasha timing — two good charts entering their hardest planetary periods simultaneously will have a stormy first chapter; knowing this in advance turns a crisis into a forecast.
- Venus and Jupiter health — the karakas of love and wisdom in each chart color romance and guidance in the marriage.
- The Navamsa (D9) chart — the divisional chart of marriage, where a placement's true strength for partnership shows. A planet strong in D1 but broken in D9 keeps its promise poorly.
Nadi and Bhakoot dosha — the deal-breakers that often aren't
The two heaviest guna penalties — Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7) — terrify families precisely because they can zero out a score. Yet both carry classical cancellation rules that matchmaking software rarely applies: same-sign Moons, friendly sign lords, and several other conditions neutralise them. We regularly clear matches that an app had already buried.
How to use matching well
Treat the guna score as the first filter, then have the full charts read together — 7th houses, doshas with cancellations, dashas and D9. Ask not 'do they pass?' but 'what will this marriage's strengths and pressure points be, and when?' That is information two families can actually use — and it is the difference between matching horoscopes and understanding them.

Above 18 is workable, above 24 comfortable — provided Nadi and Bhakoot are clean or cancelled, and the full-chart factors agree. A high score with an uncancelled Nadi dosha needs more attention, not less.
Mutual Mangal dosha is one classical cancellation, and often it does resolve the issue — but the placements should still be judged individually. Have it read rather than assumed.
